Safe online shopping – stay secure this festive season

Following our recent seven deadly sins blog, we’ve invited consumer website Buyagift to share their tips and a handy infographic, on staying secure online during the Festive shopping period:

It isn’t just organizations being targeted by cyber criminals; individuals are falling victim to online scams and fraud - leaving them with less confidence in making purchases online. Preventing the theft of personal and financial information can begin with basic knowledge in how to spot a credible website.

With an ever-increasing rise in online shopping during the festive season, it’s important to know what to look out for. The overall look of a website can be a big indicator, so it’s important to always trust your gut instincts. However, it’s still easy to fall victim to scams when a website appears genuine. Tell-tale signs that a site may not be legitimate include:

  • the absence of a customer services page: providing a way to contact the company along with their policies on delivery and returns.
  • too many advertisements can also indicate that a site has only been created in order to gain revenue from ads.
  • the presence of negative reviews, or the absence of them altogether can imply that the site is untrustworthy.

Thankfully, there are also a number of signs to look out for that ensure you are on a safe site. Trust mark badges act as assurance that the site is secure, giving confidence in the legitimacy of a transaction. Positive reviews can also be a great indicator of a trustworthy site.

Buyagift have created a handy guide, further demonstrating how to spot a trustworthy website and to remain secure over this coming festive period.
