The Edge Server works in harmony with your current MIMEsweeper for SMTP installation while drawing on thousands of other Edge Servers in the grid to form an impenetrable virtual barrier from which the whole community benefits and the spammers lose out.
The Edge Server is an email firewall. It filters the inbound connection for all the bad stuff that circulates and threatens their infrastructure. It stops spam, viruses and malware and it keeps it all away from their valuable internal networks.
The management of MIMEsweeper for SMTP sits in the safe network and is controlled by the Primary Configuration Server (PCS). The PCS orchestrates the operations of up to 8 Policy Servers (PS) that enforce business policy in the dangerous DMZ. We’re offering our customers the chance to split that PS in to two parts; to move the business processing in to the safe network (where it can happily and safely work with EXCHANGEmanager) and to leave the hygiene elements in the DMZ.
The Edge Server is a set and forget device. Upon installation, it’s set to reject all spam and viruses*; to pass all suspicious mail to the Policy Servers for manual verification or end user release, to deliver all hygienic email to the PS for further policy enforcement, and to encrypt and decrypt mail flowing between trusted partners. Administrators will schedule all the threat reports to be delivered directly to their inbox, the SNMP alerting to link in to the system management processes and the auto-backup facility to make nightly copies of the stored data.
On top of MIMEsweeper for SMTP 5.2 SP3, you will load the new Edge Server Extension Kit [available here] that allows for the correct interpretation of any suspicious mail; you will then switch off your existing anti-spam defenses.
