Scales from a single server to multi-server deployments handling over
3.5 millions of messages per day
MIMEsweeper for SMTP filters all e-mail messages to determine:
who the message has come from,
where it is going to,
how it is constructed, and
what it contains.
To understand the construction and content of the message, the message is taken apart using a process called “recursive decomposition”. This process enables the MIMEsweeper content engine to deal with situations where a file is nested inside another file - for example, an image file embedded into a Word document that has been zipped before being sent. Once the message has been disassembled the policy needed to validate the message is identified and message checks such as looking for viruses and spam, keywords and phrases undertaken so a decision may be made on what to do with the message. (Watermarks, document fingerprints and other file characteristics may also be used to determine policy.)
The MIMEsweeper policy engine then applies the appropriate policy rules depending on the Sender/Recipient combination. Basic options include deliver, delete or quarantine the message and then inform the appropriate person(s) about the message but there are many more.
The following key components make up the MIMEsweeper for SMTP software solution:
Edge Server - e-mail 'firewall' positioned in the DMZ to intercept all inbound SMTP traffic coming through the perimeter firewall
PCS (Primary Configuration Server) - controls the definition and replication of policy
PS (Policy Server) - processes e-mail
In addition, the MIMEsweeper for SMTP’s modular architecture provides:
Database Server usingMSDE, SQL Express, SQL 2000, SQL 2005 or Oracle9
Report Centerproviding a series of pre-configured reports
Audit Server for the generation of auditing reports
Audit Consolidator that summarizes message processing and sends this data to the Audit Server
Web Server to drive all web-based components
All of the elements above, apart from the Edge Server, may be configured to run on a single server, or the individual elements may be deployed across multiple servers to optimize security and maximize resilience.
The following additional cost option components are also available:
EXCHANGEmanager™
allows content filtering policies and malware checking to be applied to internal e-mail in a Microsoft Exchange server infrastructure
cost option, deployment of anti-virus and malware checking on the Edge Server to compliment existing e-mail server anti-virus, or offer dual-layer anti-virus protection
