Anti-Virus Integration

MIMEsweeper for SMTP 5.+ provides three different types of 'Scenario' for integrating with anti-virus (AV) tools. These are:

1. (Type 1) The Content Scanner Scenario to integrate with the AV tool
2. (Type 2) A MIMEsweeper Scenario for the anti-virus tool (wrapper) to link via an API interface
3. (Type 3) A Virus Manager Scenario to call a command line or executable AV tool
*For optimum performance Type 1 or 2 should be used

Each AV product will only work with a specific type (or types) of scenario, depending on how the integration was designed.

Anti-Virus Integration with MAILsweeper for SMTP 4.3

MAILsweeper for SMTP 4.3 provides three different types of 'Scenario' for integrating with anti-virus (AV) tools. These are:

1. The Content Scanner Scenario to integrate with the AV tool
2. A MIMEsweeper Scenario for the anti-virus tool (wrapper) to link via an API interface
3. A Virus Manager Scenario to call a command line or executable AV tool

Each AV product will only work with a specific type (or types) of scenario, depending on how the integration was designed.

Generally, in a distributed deployment of MAILsweeper for SMTP, you are recommended to use either a Content Scanner scenario or a MIMEsweeper™ scenario for a third-party anti-virus tool, rather than creating a Virus Manager scenario.

Supported Anti-Virus Tools for MAILsweeper for SMTP 4.3:

AV tools no longer supported under MAILsweeper 4.3.
If upgrading from MAILsweeper 4.2.5 the following results will occur:

The scenarios in the table below integrate the following API based anti-virus tools into MAILsweeper for SMTP. Note - you will need to separately install each anti virus tool, which you will need to obtain from the appropriate vendor.

Guides to Scenario types

Type 1: Content Scanner scenario

This is the most up to date way for integrating Anti-Virus tools with MAILsweeper™ products. (This type is only available for MAILsweeper 4.3 for SMTP)

Type 2: MIMEsweeper™ scenario for the anti-virus tool (wrappers)

This is not as up to date as a content scanner scenario.
For this type the system manager must obtain a copy of a special scenario for the AV tool that they plan to use. These special scenarios are available within the MAILsweeper 4.3 for SMTP installer software which is available both as part of the product CD and in the evaluation download from the Clearswift web site.
The vendor's Anti-Virus application needs to be installed and the scenario needs to be added to MAILsweeper.

Versions of these MIMEsweeper scenarios for MAILsweeper 4.25 are available from the download section of the Clearswift web site.

Type 3: Virus Manager scenario

This is the least integrated type of scenario and generally provides the slowest solution.
A virus manager scenario calls the AV tool by its command line. It has limited usage.
